Olivier Rousteing Has a New House to Transform
Olivier Rousteing has taken on a new creative-director role at Rabanne, moving from the house where he spent 14 years into a brand whose history is closely connected to experimentation, metallic craft and unconventional fashion.
Olivier Rousteing's name has been closely associated with Balmain for more than a decade.
Now he has a new house to shape.
Rabanne formally appointed Rousteing as its creative director in July 2026. He succeeds Julien Dossena, who left the position after 13 years.
Rousteing spent 14 years at Balmain before stepping down in November 2025.
His appointment at Rabanne is therefore not simply another creative-director change.
It is a transition between two fashion houses with strong but very different identities.
Balmain is strongly associated with structured glamour, military references, sharp tailoring and celebrity culture.
Rabanne has historically been defined by experimentation with materials, metallic surfaces and futuristic construction.
The challenge for Rousteing will be determining how much of his existing design vocabulary should travel with him.
A creative director is rarely expected to erase the history of a house.
The more difficult task is to make that history feel relevant to a new generation.
Rabanne's heritage provides plenty of material to work with.
The house has long been associated with unconventional construction and Paco Rabanne's use of metal and experimental materials.
Rousteing's appointment therefore creates a potentially interesting meeting point between his experience in high-impact luxury fashion and Rabanne's experimental DNA.
His first show for the house is scheduled for Paris Fashion Week in March 2027, when he will present the Fall/Winter 2027 collection.
That gives the industry several months to speculate.
But speculation is not the collection.
The real test will begin when the clothes appear.
Until then, the most interesting story is the possibility of a new chapter for one of fashion's most unconventional houses.
